I had a very sobering thought recently about how close to being homeless I could be. I never thought of it because I own my home and I also own another home I inherited that I rent out. Once I did the breakdown on how I am doing now financially and how it will affect me in the near future, I could be homeless.
Over the years, I've worked from home and had a pretty good income. I also had some money in savings. I have taken a few different families into my home to help them get on their feet. This caused my finances to both decrease and increase at various times.
Most all of the jobs I did from home have fizzled out over the last couple of years. At the same time, I was having to do repairs on my rental home, which took a lot out of savings. My financial stability took a plummet and with the income I have now, there isn't anything left to put in savings. This means that I have to pay insurance for my rental home and property taxes on both homes out of savings.
If things do not improve financially, I could be in the position of not being able to pay property taxes for either home. If you don't pay taxes, you can lose your home. I find this preposterous since taxes have been paid on both homes for several decades.
I live very frugally and people are amazed at how I am able to pay bills on the very small income I get. I have never not paid a bill. But, the thought of losing my homes because I might not be able to pay property taxes in a couple of years, is a scary thought.
People often think they could never be one of the homeless, but looking at my situation, it is very possible, not only for me, but many others. People are homeless for various reasons. It isn't always because they are too lazy to work or because they are on drugs or alcoholics. Many are people just like you and me who are trying their best, but got defeated because of circumstances.
